Can I Get a Backdated Sick Note in the UK?

If you've been off sick for a few days before seeking a fit note, you might be wondering: can the doctor make the note cover the time you've already been ill?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Yes — a UK doctor can backdate a sick note by up to 14 days from the date of assessment. This is standard clinical practice and is not in any way dishonest or irregular.

WHY BACKDATING IS SOMETIMES NECESSARY

There are completely legitimate reasons why someone might seek a fit note a few days into their illness:

● You genuinely hoped you'd recover quickly and didn't want to bother a doctor

● You couldn't get an appointment sooner

● You didn't know you needed a note until your employer asked for one

● Your condition worsened gradually and you weren't sure at first whether it was serious enough

In all of these situations, a retroactive fit note covering the period you've been unwell is entirely appropriate.

HOW DOES BACKDATING WORK?

When you consult with a doctor at Dr Sick, you'll describe when your symptoms started and how they've progressed. If the doctor assesses that your condition has been affecting your ability to work since the start date you provide, they can issue a fit note backdated to that date — up to 14 days prior.

The note will reflect the actual period of illness, not just the date of the consultation.

WHAT DR SICK CANNOT DO

We cannot backdate sick notes for periods that are clinically unjustifiable — i.e. if there's no medical basis for the absence during that time. Our doctors assess each case on its merits.

We also cannot backdate beyond 14 days from the date of consultation.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU'VE BEEN OFF LONGER THAN 14 DAYS

If you've been unwell for longer than 14 days without seeing a doctor, you'll need separate notes to cover the full period. Get in touch and our team can advise you on the best approach.
