The DVLA requires drivers to notify them of certain medical conditions — and in some cases, requires a formal medical assessment before your licence can be retained or renewed. Here's how it all works.
WHEN DOES THE DVLA REQUIRE A MEDICAL?
You must notify the DVLA if you have a medical condition that could affect your ability to drive safely. This includes:
● Epilepsy or seizures
● Stroke or TIA (mini-stroke)
● Diabetes managed with insulin or certain medications
● Sleep disorders (including obstructive sleep apnoea)
● Visual impairment
● Certain heart conditions (including atrial fibrillation, heart failure, or recent heart attack)
● Neurological conditions (Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, etc.)
● Mental health conditions in certain circumstances
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU NOTIFY THE DVLA?
The DVLA will write to you (and sometimes to your doctor) to gather information about your condition. In many cases, they will ask your GP to complete a medical questionnaire. In some cases, they may require a specialist report.

GROUP 1 VS GROUP 2 LICENCES
The DVLA has different (and stricter) medical standards for Group 2 licence holders (HGV and bus/coach drivers) compared to standard Group 1 car drivers. Our doctors are familiar with both sets of standards.
WHAT IF YOUR LICENCE IS SUSPENDED?
If your licence has been suspended pending medical review, the DVLA process can take months through NHS channels. Private medical reports and assessments can significantly speed up this process.
