Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a benefit for people with a long-term health condition or disability. The application process can be daunting — but a supporting letter from a doctor can make a significant difference to the outcome of your claim.
WHAT IS PIP?
PIP is a non-means-tested benefit that helps with the extra costs of living with a long-term health condition or disability. It has two components:
● Daily living component (for help with everyday activities)
● Mobility component (for help getting around)
Each component has a standard and enhanced rate. The current rates (2025/26) range from £28.70 to £75.75 per week depending on the component and rate.
WHAT IS A PIP MEDICAL ASSESSMENT?
Most PIP claimants go through a functional assessment — either face-to-face, by video, or by telephone — with a healthcare professional from a DWP-contracted assessment provider. This is separate from any medical evidence you provide yourself.
HOW A DOCTOR'S LETTER HELPS
While the assessment is conducted independently, supporting evidence from a doctor who knows your condition can significantly strengthen your claim. This includes:
● A letter describing your diagnosis and how your condition affects daily activities
● Details of your treatment, medication, and prognosis
● Information about variability — i.e., that your condition is not always the same day-to-day
DR SICK'S SUPPORTING LETTERS FOR PIP
We can provide comprehensive supporting letters for PIP applications describing:
● Your medical condition(s) and formal diagnosis
● How your condition affects your ability to perform daily living and mobility activities
