Sick Note for Chest Infection and Pneumonia

Sick Note for Chest Infection and Pneumonia

Chest infections range from relatively mild bronchitis to severe pneumonia requiring hospitalisation. Even moderate chest infections can make working completely impossible for days or weeks.

TYPES OF CHEST INFECTION

● Bronchitis — inflammation of the bronchial tubes, typically caused by a viral infection

● Pneumonia — infection of the lungs, which can be bacterial, viral, or fungal

● Pleuritis — inflammation of the lining around the lungs

● Bronchopneumonia — a type of pneumonia affecting patches of lung tissue

WHEN IS A SICK NOTE NEEDED FOR CHEST INFECTION?

Most mild chest infections resolve within 7-10 days. For absences of 7 calendar days or fewer, you can self-certify without a doctor's note. However, you'll need a fit note if:

● Your illness extends beyond 7 days

● You develop pneumonia or a serious bacterial infection

● You are at high risk of complications (elderly, immunocompromised, chronic lung disease)

● Your employer requests a note sooner

RECOVERY TIME FOR PNEUMONIA

Pneumonia recovery varies considerably:

● Mild community-acquired pneumonia: 1-3 weeks before feeling well enough to work

● Moderate pneumonia: 4-6 weeks

● Severe pneumonia (hospitalisation): several weeks to months for full recovery A fit note can cover the full recovery period.

RETURNING TO WORK WITH CHEST PROBLEMS

Even after the acute infection has resolved, fatigue, persistent cough, and reduced lung function can affect your ability to work. A fit note can cover this residual recovery period or recommend a phased return.
