Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) or systemic exertion intolerance disease (SEID), is a serious, long-term illness that affects multiple body systems. Despite its name, it is far more than "feeling tired."
WHAT IS CFS/ME?
CFS/ME is characterised by:
● Post-exertional malaise (PEM) — a worsening of symptoms after physical or mental activity
● Profound fatigue that does not improve with rest
● Cognitive difficulties ("brain fog")
● Sleep disturbances
● Orthostatic intolerance (dizziness or worsening symptoms when upright)
● Pain — muscle and joint pain, headaches
The condition varies enormously in severity. Some people are mildly affected and can work part-time. Others are severely affected and housebound or bedbound.
IS CFS/ME RECOGNISED AS A DISABILITY?
Yes. In its significant forms, CFS/ME qualifies as a disability under the Equality Act 2010. This means employers are legally required to make reasonable adjustments.
GETTING A SICK NOTE FOR CFS/ME
At Dr Sick, our online consultation is designed with low-energy patients in mind. You can complete it at your own pace, save and return to it, and describe your symptoms in your own words.
Our doctors understand the fluctuating nature of CFS/ME and can issue fit notes covering flare-up periods as well as supporting letters for workplace adjustment requests.
THE IMPORTANCE OF PACING
A fit note can also recommend a phased return to work with careful pacing — gradually increasing activity to avoid triggering post-exertional malaise.
SUPPORTING LETTERS FOR BENEFITS
Dr Sick can also provide supporting letters for PIP applications and other benefit claims for CFS/ME patients.
