Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside it, causing chronic pain, heavy periods, and a range of debilitating symptoms. Despite affecting around 1 in 10 women, it remains significantly under-recognised in workplace settings.
HOW ENDOMETRIOSIS AFFECTS WORK
Endometriosis can cause:
● Severe pelvic pain, particularly during menstruation
● Chronic fatigue
● Painful bowel movements or urinary symptoms during periods
● Pain during or after sex
● Psychological impacts including anxiety and depression
These symptoms can make it completely impossible to attend or concentrate at work — particularly during flare-ups or around menstruation.
YOUR RIGHTS AT WORK
Endometriosis is increasingly recognised as a disability under the Equality Act 2010, particularly in its severe and chronic forms. This means your employer has a legal duty to make reasonable adjustments for you.
A fit note is an important piece of documentation in asserting these rights.
GETTING A SICK NOTE FOR ENDOMETRIOSIS
At Dr Sick, you can describe your symptoms and their impact on your working life through our confidential online consultation. Our GMC-registered doctors are familiar with endometriosis and can issue fit notes covering specific flare-up periods.
We can also provide letters supporting workplace adjustments, such as:
● Working from home during particularly painful days
● Flexible working arrangements
● Reduced hours around menstruation
YOU DON'T NEED A FORMAL DIAGNOSIS
You do not need to have had endometriosis formally diagnosed via laparoscopy to receive a sick note. If your symptoms are causing you to be unfit for work, that is the clinical basis for a fit note.
