WHEN DO YOU NEED A SICK NOTE FOR FOOD POISONING?
For most cases of food poisoning or gastroenteritis, symptoms resolve within 24-72 hours. If your absence is 7 calendar days or fewer, you can self-certify — no doctor's note needed.
However, you may need a sick note if:
● Your illness lasts longer than 7 days
● Your employer asks for documentation earlier
● You work in a food handling or healthcare environment and must be signed off to return
● Your symptoms are unusually severe (severe dehydration, high fever, blood in stool)
FOOD HANDLERS AND STRICT RETURN-TO-WORK RULES
If you work in food production, catering, or a healthcare environment, your employer may have strict rules about when you can return after gastroenteritis. In some cases, you may need to be symptom-free for 48 hours before returning. A doctor's note confirming you are fit to return may be required.
