Sick Note for Insomnia and Sleep Disorders: Can You Get Time Off?

Sick Note for Insomnia and Sleep Disorders: Can You Get Time Off?

Sleep is fundamental to health — and severe sleep deprivation can be as cognitively impairing as alcohol. If insomnia or a sleep disorder is preventing you from functioning safely at work, you are entitled to medical support and documentation.

IS INSOMNIA A VALID REASON FOR A SICK NOTE?

Yes. Chronic insomnia and sleep disorders are recognised medical conditions. Where they are severely affecting your ability to function — your concentration, reaction time, judgment, or emotional stability — they justify time off work and a fit note.

This is particularly important in roles where fatigue creates a safety risk: driving, operating machinery, healthcare, childcare, or working at heights.

SLEEP CONDITIONS WE COVER

Dr Sick can issue fit notes for:

● Chronic insomnia

● Sleep apnoea (particularly where treatment is pending)

● Restless legs syndrome

● Circadian rhythm disorders (e.g. delayed sleep phase)

● Parasomnias (sleepwalking, night terrors)

● Narcolepsy

WHAT DOES A SICK NOTE FOR INSOMNIA LOOK LIKE?

Your fit note will describe how your sleep condition is affecting your ability to work — for example, impaired concentration, excessive daytime sleepiness, inability to perform safety-critical tasks. It does not need to go into extensive clinical detail.

RETURN TO WORK WITH ADJUSTMENTS

A fit note can also recommend modifications that might help you return to work while your condition is being managed. For example:

● Avoiding early morning starts if you have delayed sleep phase

● Working from home

● Reduced hours while treatment is initiated
