Long COVID — the persistence of COVID-19 symptoms for weeks or months after the initial infection — has affected hundreds of thousands of people in the UK. Its impact on the ability to work can be severe and prolonged.
WHAT IS LONG COVID?
Long COVID is defined as symptoms that persist for more than 4 weeks after the initial COVID-19 infection. Common symptoms include:
● Severe, unexplained fatigue
● Breathlessness or chest tightness
● Cognitive difficulties ("brain fog") — poor memory, difficulty concentrating
● Heart palpitations
● Muscle aches and pain
● Headaches
● Sleep disturbance
● Anxiety and depression
These symptoms can fluctuate and may worsen significantly with physical or mental exertion (known as post-exertional malaise).
CAN YOU GET A SICK NOTE FOR LONG COVID?
Yes. Long COVID is a recognised medical condition. A fit note can cover any period during which your Long COVID symptoms are preventing you from working.
Long COVID qualifies as a disability under the Equality Act 2010 in cases where it has a substantial long-term adverse effect on your ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.
WHAT DOES A SICK NOTE FOR LONG COVID SAY?
Your fit note will describe the relevant symptoms and their impact on your ability to work. Given the variable nature of Long COVID, your doctor may recommend a phased return to work or modified duties rather than full absence.
