Sick Note for Migraines: Getting Time Off Work for Severe Headaches

Migraines are not "just bad headaches." For millions of people in the UK, a migraine attack means hours or days of intense pain, nausea, light sensitivity, and complete inability to work. They are a genuine medical condition — and a valid reason for a sick note.

MIGRAINES AND SICK LEAVE IN THE UK

Around 10 million people in the UK suffer from migraines. They are the third most common neurological disorder in the world. A moderate to severe migraine attack can make working completely impossible — particularly for jobs that involve screens, driving, or any physical activity.

A fit note for migraines is legitimate and appropriate.

WHEN DO YOU NEED A SICK NOTE FOR A MIGRAINE?

If a migraine attack (or a cluster of attacks) keeps you off work for more than 7 calendar days, your employer can request a fit note. Some employers may ask for one sooner, particularly if you have a pattern of migraine-related absences.

You can also use a fit note to support a return to work with modifications — for example, working in a reduced-light environment, working from home, or a temporary reduction in screen time.

CAN AN ONLINE DOCTOR ISSUE A MIGRAINE SICK NOTE?

Yes. You don't need a physical examination to receive a fit note for migraines. A doctor can assess your condition based on:

● Your description of symptoms and their severity

● How long you've been affected

● Whether you have a history of migraines

● How the condition is impacting your ability to work

At Dr Sick, our GMC-registered doctors review every consultation individually.

CHRONIC MIGRAINE

If you suffer from chronic migraine (15 or more headache days per month, with 8 or more being migrainous), you may qualify for additional workplace adjustments under the Equality Act 2010. A fit note can support requests for these adjustments.
