Sick Note for Sciatica: Getting Time Off Work for Back and Leg Pain

Sciatica is one of the most painful and debilitating musculoskeletal conditions — and one of the most common reasons for sick leave in the UK. If sciatic nerve pain is stopping you from working, you need a sick note fast.

WHAT IS SCIATICA?

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve — which runs from the lower back down through the buttock and leg — becomes irritated or compressed. It causes sharp, shooting pain that can radiate from the lower back all the way down to the foot.

Symptoms can include:

● Severe lower back, buttock, and leg pain

● Numbness or tingling in the leg or foot

● Weakness in the leg

● Difficulty sitting, standing, walking, or driving

WHY SCIATICA MAKES WORKING IMPOSSIBLE

Sciatica can make virtually all work activities painful or impossible. Sitting for long periods (office work, driving) often worsens sciatic pain significantly. Physical jobs that involve lifting, bending, or standing are typically completely out of the question during a flare.

HOW LONG DOES SCIATICA LAST?

Acute sciatica usually resolves within 4-6 weeks, though some episodes last longer. A fit note can cover however long you are genuinely unable to work.

GETTING A SICK NOTE FOR SCIATICA ONLINE

You don't need a physical examination to receive a fit note for sciatica. Our online consultation at Dr Sick asks about:

● Your symptoms and their severity

● How long you've been affected

● Which movements or activities worsen the pain

● How sciatica is preventing you from doing your job

Our GMC-registered doctors review your case and issue your fit note same day.

MODIFIED DUTIES FOR SCIATICA

If you could work with adjustments — for example, working from home, avoiding driving, or taking regular movement breaks — our doctors can reflect this in your fit note.
