Sick Note for Shingles: Recovery Time and Getting Documentation

Shingles (herpes zoster) is a painful viral infection caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus. For many people, it causes severe, debilitating pain that can last weeks — and it can have serious complications.

HOW SHINGLES AFFECTS YOUR ABILITY TO WORK

Shingles typically causes:

● A painful, blistering rash (usually on one side of the torso, face, or around one eye)

● Intense burning or shooting pain — often described as one of the worst pains imaginable

● Fatigue and flu-like symptoms in the early stages

● Sensitivity to touch (even clothing touching the affected area can be unbearable)

In severe cases, shingles affecting the face can cause eye complications, hearing loss, or neurological symptoms.

HOW LONG DOES SHINGLES LAST?

The acute rash phase typically lasts 2-4 weeks. However, post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) — nerve pain that continues after the rash has healed — can last months or even years in some cases.

GETTING A SICK NOTE FOR SHINGLES

A fit note for shingles is appropriate for most cases, particularly in the acute phase. Our online consultation at Dr Sick asks about:

● The location and severity of the rash

● Your pain levels and their impact on daily functioning

● Any complications (eye involvement, facial shingles)

● How long you've been unwell

IS SHINGLES CONTAGIOUS IN THE WORKPLACE?

Shingles itself is not contagious (you cannot catch shingles from someone who has it). However, the virus can cause chickenpox in people who have never had it or been vaccinated. If you work with vulnerable people (immunocompromised individuals, pregnant women, newborns), you may need to stay off work until your blisters have crusted over.
