Surgery — whether planned or emergency — almost always requires time off work. Getting the right documentation in place before, during, and after your operation protects your income and your employment.
PRE-OPERATIVE SICK NOTES
In some cases, you may need a fit note before your surgery — for example:
● If your condition requires rest before the operation
● If your mobility is significantly impaired while awaiting surgery
● If your pain levels or medication make working unsafe prior to the procedure
POST-OPERATIVE SICK NOTES
Recovery from surgery is the most common reason for this type of fit note. Recovery times vary enormously:
● Minor day case surgery: 2-7 days
● Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery: 1-3 weeks typically
● Major open surgery: 4-12 weeks or longer
● Joint replacement (hip, knee): 6-12 weeks typically
● Cardiac surgery: 6-12 weeks
● Spinal surgery: varies significantly
Your surgeon will typically advise on recovery time, but you'll need a fit note to formally document your absence.
HOW DR SICK CAN HELP
While your hospital team will handle your immediate post-operative care, getting a fit note to cover your recovery period doesn't need to involve another hospital appointment. Dr Sick can issue fit notes covering surgical recovery based on:
● The nature of the surgery
● Your surgeon's estimated recovery time
● Your current symptoms and functional limitations
PHASED RETURN TO WORK
For longer recoveries, a phased return to work is often recommended. Dr Sick can provide medical letters supporting a structured, gradual return.
